Wren Class - for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

Children in Wren Class will receive their Little Wandle reading book each week. We ask that they read this book at least three times at home to build fluency and confidence. Additional reading time can be spent enjoying stories read aloud to them by family members.

Reception children don't currently have set homework but the children do sometimes have activities to practise at home such as a short poem or some letters to learn, or a game to play, which will be found in their blue book bag.

Starting school is a huge milestone for all of our Reception class children and their families. We are so impressed at how quickly our new Little Wrens have settled in!  For the first few weeks, our focus is on welcoming the children into their new ‘school family’ and making sure everyone feels safe, happy and belongs. Our class is called Little Wrens, as after having every morning in a small group on their  own with Mrs Sage,  they join in with ‘Wrens’ and Miss Bishop (year 1 and 2) for part of every afternoon. There are lots of new friends to make, new grown-ups to get to know and a whole new environment to explore! We’ve already found our way around the classroom and our own outdoor area as well as the school playground and our beautiful wooded area. We’ve also visited our school library, had lunch in the hall and popped over to our local church.

In Little Wrens we don’t have ‘homework’ but the children do sometimes have activities to practise at home such as a short poem or some letters to learn, or a game to play, which will be found in their blue book bag. The children bring a library book home to share each week and as the term progresses a reading book will be sent home each week too.

Well done for getting off to such a flying start, Little Wrens,  we are very much looking forward to a fabulous first term at school!

This Term in Our Class – A Wonderful Start to the Year!

We've had a fantastic start to the new school year and are looking forward to an exciting term of learning and discovery. This term, we will be exploring Stuck and How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers, alongside the traditional tale Little Red Riding Hood. The children will focus on sentence structure, using descriptive adjectives, and strengthening the key foundations, or "bones", of writing. Our Maths learning will focus on place value, helping children develop confidence with numbers, counting, comparing quantities, and understanding how numbers are represented.

In Science, we will be learning about the human body, exploring different body parts, their functions, and how we can keep ourselves healthy. In RE, we will be investigating the question, "Who do Christians believe created the world?" and learning about the Christian Creation story and its significance. Through our history topic, children will explore their own place in history, looking at personal timelines, significant events, and how things change over time. In Art, we will be experimenting with line and shape, developing drawing skills and exploring different ways artists use these elements in their work. We are looking forward to a busy and successful term and thank you for your continued support.

Little Wrens are still enjoying our topic ‘Marvellous Me’.

This week we painted our portraits and shared an important fact about ourselves. We talked about families and enjoyed re telling the story “Owl Babies” using props we collected in our wooded area. Back inside we made our own nests, adding shiny pebbles to represent the important people in our lives.

In Maths we thought about the size of the owl babies when we used sponges to print them.

Our poem this week was ‘Five little cakes in a bakers shop’ so it was only right that we made more than enough to go with it!

A Fantastic Start to the Year!

We have had a wonderful start to the new school year, with lots of fun, learning and smiles along the way! The children have settled brilliantly and have been working hard to learn our routines and understand our classroom rules. They have shown such maturity and enthusiasm and are already doing a fantastic job of demonstrating our school values in everything they do.

In English, we have begun exploring Stuck and How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers. The children have thoroughly enjoyed these stories and have shown great imagination when discussing them. One of our favourite activities was deciding how we would catch our own star and where we would take it once we had caught it. The children's ideas were creative, thoughtful and often very funny!

We have also enjoyed taking our learning outside in Science with Mrs Sage as we began exploring the human body. The children loved being active while learning and have shown great curiosity through their questions and discussions.

I am incredibly proud of the start the children have made this term. They have embraced new challenges, built positive relationships and approached their learning with enthusiasm and determination. It has been lovely to see their confidence growing each day, and I am very much looking forward to all the exciting learning still to come this term.
