Kingfisher and Kestrel Class have had an exciting and inspiring time taking part in the Acorn Trust Science Week! This year’s challenge put their engineering skills to the test: design a paper boat using only one piece of paper that could hold as many marbles as possible without sinking.

The children explored a fantastic range of ideas, experimenting with shape, folding techniques and buoyancy. Each child was able to create and test five different designs before choosing their strongest contender. Once they had selected their best boat, they turned their final design into a detailed and creative poster, showcasing their thinking and scientific reasoning.

The week ended with the ultimate test—placing their final boats on the water and loading them with marbles to see how much weight they could hold. We were amazed by their determination, teamwork and creativity throughout the process.

A huge congratulations goes to Team Gladys West, who achieved an incredible 174 marbles in their boat before it finally sank! What a brilliant achievement.

Miss Marks and Miss MacDonagh are incredibly proud of every single child for their enthusiasm, resilience and brilliant scientific thinking during this challenge. Well done, Kingfisher and Kestrel Class!

After School Club also joined in with Science Week as enthusiastic ‘Science Explorers’, diving into a bubble‑themed challenge where children experimented to see if they could create their very own square bubbles.
